Participating Institutions: Saint Francis University, Juniata College, Mt. Aloysius College, Communities in Schools of the Laurel Highlands, Goodwill Industries, and Pennsylvania Mountain Service Corps

The Southern Alleghenies Learn and Serve Alliance (SALSA) is new in many ways. Our member institutions of higher learning are just beginning to embrace the practice of course-embedded service learning and assessment. Our community partnerships, while long-term in several instances, are new to an attempt to coordinate and to collaborate on a regional level with colleges and universities. The original organizers of SALSA are new to one another, although one or two specific persons have worked together on earlier projects or programs. This newness is both an asset and a liability.

Participating institutions: Binghamton University, Broome Community College, and Davis College

Highlight: The goal of this project is to deepen the quality of service learning and campus/community collaboration in our region. The institutions represent the only three colleges in the Broome-Tioga County region. Frequently, the community partners in the region have lamented there is no coordination of efforts between the three institutions. If the community organization has ideas or specific project requests, they don’t know who to contact at the colleges to begin the process. They are frustrated when their calls are passed through several offices at the college and their needs are unmet. Additionally, because of the large regional college population, the community partners receive numerous inquires on potential service opportunities from representatives for the three institutions each semester. The needs of community partners have not been systematically assessed and translated into manageable service learning projects. These uncoordinated requests often fall short of meeting the needs of staff and consumers connected with the community organizations.
